Phoenix Rising brought an inspiring celebration of East-West musical traditions to Toronto’s Koerner Hall, led by acclaimed violinist and Artistic Director Angel Wang with the Canadian Chinese Society for the Arts (CCSA) Orchestra and conductor Claudio Vena.

A highlight of the evening was the world premiere of Phoenix Rising, a violin concerto composed by award-winning Canadian-Chinese composer Alice Ping Yee Ho especially for Angel Wang. Inspired by the phoenix as a symbol of resilience, rebirth, and hope, the work showcased both virtuosic violin writing and a contemporary interpretation of Chinese cultural imagery.

The program also featured beloved Chinese works including the Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto, Galloping Horses, and Jasmine Flower, alongside Western classics by Prokofiev, Brahms, Mozart, Bizet, Vivaldi, and other celebrated composers.

Through its vibrant combination of Chinese and Western repertoire, Phoenix Rising reflected Angel Wang’s ongoing artistic vision: connecting cultures through music and bringing the beauty of Chinese musical heritage to a broader international audience.
