From Ulanqab to the World: Angel Wang and Phoenix Orchestra Share Chinese Stories Through Music
From Ulanqab in Inner Mongolia to Canada, from her childhood music lessons to international concert stages, music has remained at the heart of violinist Angel Wang’s journey.
“Music is how I came to understand the world,” Wang reflects.
Growing up and learning the violin in Ulanqab, she remembers hearing something of the grasslands in the sound of her instrument. Years later, as her musical journey brought her to stages around the world, she came to appreciate an even greater truth: music transcends borders. It needs no translation to speak directly to the human heart.
That belief has also become an important part of the artistic vision shared by Angel Wang and Phoenix Orchestra.
Bringing Chinese Music to the World
For years, Angel Wang and Phoenix Orchestra have explored the meeting point between Eastern and Western musical traditions.
Through violin and symphonic music, they seek to introduce the beauty of Chinese music to audiences of different cultural backgrounds, creating opportunities for Chinese melodies and stories to find new life on international stages.
In 2025, Angel Wang released her album Phoenix Rising (《凤凰飞舞》) in Canada.
The album presents a collection of classic Chinese musical works through the combination of solo violin and Western symphonic orchestration, creating a musical dialogue between Chinese heritage and Western classical traditions.
The title work, Phoenix Rising, holds particular significance.
Written by a Chinese-Canadian composer, the piece brings together contemporary musical expression and classical traditions. The image of the phoenix—symbolizing perseverance, renewal and the courage to rise again—reflects an idea that has remained central to Wang's musical journey and the spirit of Phoenix Orchestra.
It is a reminder that challenges do not have to mark an ending. They can also become the beginning of something new.
Connecting People Through Performance and Education
For Angel Wang and Phoenix Orchestra, sharing music extends far beyond the concert stage.
Over the years, their musical activities have included large-scale symphonic concerts, chamber performances, lectures, masterclasses and collaborations with musicians from different cultural backgrounds.
From an invited performance at the Beijing Concert Hall as part of the “Meet in Beijing” arts festival in 2019, to subsequent concert projects and the development of Phoenix Rising, Angel Wang and Phoenix Orchestra have continued to create opportunities for Eastern and Western musical traditions to meet.
For them, performing Chinese music is not simply about presenting familiar melodies in a new setting.
It is about creating genuine cultural dialogue through music.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Music education has long been another important part of Angel Wang's work.
Her years of teaching and performing abroad have strengthened her desire to share those experiences with a new generation of young musicians in China.
Looking ahead, Wang hopes to work alongside Phoenix Orchestra to develop more concerts, masterclasses, lectures and exchanges with music institutions, creating opportunities for young musicians to learn, perform and connect across cultures.
The value of music, after all, is not measured only by how far an individual musician travels.
It can also be found in what is passed forward—the experience, encouragement and inspiration that help another generation discover its own musical voice.
Looking Homeward
Each time Angel Wang returns to Ulanqab, she discovers a hometown that continues to grow and change.
For a musician whose journey began in Jining, Ulanqab, witnessing the development of her hometown brings a profound sense of pride and connection.
Sometimes, the farther a person travels, the more clearly they understand the meaning of home.
Ulanqab remains not only where Wang grew up, but where her musical dream first began.
From the grasslands of Inner Mongolia to international concert stages—and from those stages back to the next generation—her journey continues to connect home and the wider world through music.
When speaking to young people pursuing music, Angel Wang offers a simple but deeply held message:
“Never give up too easily.”
Music is not an easy path. It requires time, discipline, patience and the determination to continue even when the journey becomes difficult.
She hopes young musicians will remain committed to their dreams, continue moving forward and discover just how far music can take them.
It is a belief shared by Angel Wang and Phoenix Orchestra:
Let music cross borders. Let cultures meet. And let music enrich the lives of people everywhere.
